Your dreams, your money, your life

Julie Murphy • February 7, 2013

In our society, we dream big. With sites like Pinterest gaining popularity by the minute, seeing something we want and dreaming about getting it is a simple click away. The easy access to luxury and growing trend of outdoing even the newest products and services, it’s easy to look at the lives we’ve worked so hard to create as inadequate.

The money connection

For so many, dreaming big means spending even bigger. Big, beautiful homes and flashy cars cost a pretty penny. Fabulous clothes, expensive shoes and handbags to match – you guessed it – aren’t free. As we chase these ideal lives that we’ve created in our minds, we lose site of what truly matters to us. This need to constantly fill our lives with stuff may be hindering us from our true desires.

When was the last time you harnessed those dreams in a productive way? By this, I mean thinking about the true underlying want that you are after. What is it about these material goals that make you happy? If I had to bet, I’d say you viewed this things as a way to feeling and being successful. But the truth is you don’t need to spend a lot of money on things in order to be a success; investing in you true dreams and goals will bring you more success than anything else.

You know what else spending won’t solve? Whatever emptiness you feel. Dreaming about a better life – career, relationships, hobbies – is a healthy exercise in evolving. It is not, however, a reason to look at what you’ve created thus far as not good enough. Like I’ve always said, you must start from and accept where you’re at right now in order to create a life that you dream of.

Action step

You are fabulous. Your life may not be what you dream it to be, but that doesn’t mean that you are a failure. Wanting better for yourself doesn’t mean that what you currently have (or are) has less worth. Dreaming big only means that you have to put in a little more work in attaining goals in your life than those who don’t have the same desires.

Devote time this week to looking at the things you love most about your current life. Why do you feel that way about those certain people, places, things and hobbies? Make a list of what’s most important to you in your current life right now and figure out how your dreams can grow from there.
